Petit tableau redoutable qui a toute la majesté d’une œuvre de grand format, Icône s’inscrit dans une année de transition importante chez l’artiste Jean McEwen. En effet, on discerne, en 1963 « un passage graduel d’une structure verticale dominante à une structure cruciforme », en même temps qu’« un registre de couleurs plus sombres », constate Constance Naubert-Riser. Cette avancée annonce la célèbre série Le drapeau inconnu, qui reprend, sous forme de variations de plans et de couleurs, une composition similaire (voir lot no 20 de cette vente). Les teintes luxuriantes dans Icône se déclinent en carmin, laque de garance, vermillon et ocre. Des terres de Sienne et d’ombre brûlée forment des puits de couleurs d’une profondeur inouïe et entraînent le regard dans une poésie antique digne de la route des épices. Corollairement, la facture du tableau emprunte au bois pétrifié ses dessins minéraux et fossilisés, lesquels méritent à eux seuls un long coup d’œil pour en apprécier l’inépuisable beauté. (A. L.)

A small yet awe-inspiring painting with all the majesty of a large-format work, Icône was produced in a year that marked a major transition in Jean McEwen’s work. In fact, as Constance Naubert-Riser noted, in 1963 one could discern “a gradual shift from a dominant vertical structure to a cross-shaped structure,” characterized by “a darker range of colours.” This development foreshadowed the famous Le drapeau inconnu series, which takes up a similar composition in the form of varied planes and colours (see lot no. 20 of this sale). The luxuriant colours in Icône include carmine, rose madder, vermillion, and ochre. The siennas and burnt umbers form colour wells of extraordinary depth, drawing the gaze into a classical poem worthy of the Spice Route. At the same time, the texture of the painting borrows from the mineral and fossilized outlines of petrified wood, which in themselves are worthy of close contemplation to appreciate their infinite beauty.
